“In October, We Wear Pink”

October has famously become Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow out of control and tumors develop. There are over 200, 000 cases per year and it has quickly become the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. The tumors can spread throughout the body if unchecked. Early detection is key in the treatment of breast cancer. It is vital that women perform self-examinations and go for annual mammograms as early as the age of 40 according to the American Cancer Society. Some say initial screens should really begin at age 35, especially if a family history of the disease is noted. Early detection leads to greater treatment options and higher survival rates. Surgery is often the primary component of a treatment plan followed by chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy. Treatments vary based on the type and stage of the cancer.

Breast cancer is a cause extremely near and dear to my heart as both friends and family members of mine have been afflicted. With this article, I hope to promote awareness and encourage activism. Breast cancer awareness is important because it empowers women to take control of their health through screenings as well as raises money for further research. The time to take action is now. Susan G Komen is one of the world’s largest non-profit foundations to fund the fight against breast cancer. I have participated in their race for the cure for over 25 years. If we band together, we can make a difference! Raising awareness by wearing pink and encouraging friends and family members to schedule screenings are easy ways to get involved. So please join me in wearing pink and spreading the word. For the month of October, I am going to feature a weekly “pink pick” to encourage everyone to get involved. There is nothing more powerful than women (and men) joining together to help other women.
