“Mind, Body, and Soul”

One of the newest trends in exercise is connecting the mind and body for the optimum workout. It’s actually what we should have been doing all along. If you hate going to the gym, why would you? If the thought of running makes you break out into hives, how often are you going to go? Exercise has become a dirty word because society has made us believe we have to sweat out our body weight or lift until we can’t move to consider a workout complete. The same seems to go for dieting. It’s believed one has to survive on salads and rice cakes just to lose weight. The trouble with all of these barbaric workouts and self-depravation is that it isn’t sustainable.

Wellness must become part of the fabric of your life and it must be a lifelong choice vs a short-term solution. Find the thing you are passionate about. What moves you? Maybe you like to walk on the beach, ride your bike, or dance. Try not to focus on distance, speed, or calories burned. Just get out there and do it! It’s really that simple. If your mind is engaged and you are enjoying yourself, you’re more likely to continue and motivate yourself for the next time.

Conversely, what if there aren’t any activities that “move you” ? Try combining things you enjoy with movement. For instance, do you like to read? Venture out for a walk while listening to an audiobook. Is TV your thing? Then, try watching your favorite show while riding a stationary bike. Remember, changing habits takes just the first step (quite literally!) and life is a marathon, not a sprint. So what are you waiting for?
