Children’s lives are often so overscheduled between school, homework, extracurricular activities, and playdates. Then, pepper in some screen time, and it seems as though so many of the simple childhood joys in life are lost. Gone are the days of just playing outside with friends. Everything is planned and scheduled and it doesn’t get any better when you grow up. In fact, it exponentially gets worse as you reach adulthood. Between work, cleaning the house, carting around kids, and maybe trying to squeeze in a workout, when was the last time you actually had fun? I mean, messy, silly, unadulterated fun?

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to change that. The unique combination of King Tides and excessive rain over the last several days brought us flooded streets and even extended onto the sidewalks. King tides are when sea levels rise to their highest levels due to temperature and currents. In South Florida, this usually occurs along the coastal areas in October. What this said to me was, that it’s an occasion to get outside and stomp some puddles……and that’s just what we did!
With only some minor protests from my sidekick, we grabbed our umbrellas and rainboots and headed out. From the moment she saw how much water filled the streets, she was all in. We stomped and sloshed our way along the sidewalks, through parking lots, and flooded streets. All the while we smiled, laughed, and had a great time! We jumped off curbs to see who could make a bigger splash, we dared each other to venture out into the deeper sections and used our umbrellas to shield us from the cars passing by. We only headed home when the waters started to recede and our bellies were hungry for lunch. I was shocked at how long we were out there. It was a wonderful lesson that sometimes it’s the little things in life that bring the most joy. Take the time to stop and smell the roses or stomp the puddles, you won’t regret it!
