Thanksgiving 2022 set into motion a plan that would take almost a year to come to fruition. It was on that day my cousin, David, and I made a pact to run a half marathon together. At first, the idea began as a lofty goal but then it became reality as we decided on the RunDisney Epcot Food and Wine event and signed up. Since we live several hours apart and would not be able to train together in person, we linked our accounts on Strava and the serious training began. We would congratulate each other after a good run and sympathize after a less-than-desirable one. My competitive spirit kicked in after I saw he reached the full distance of 13.1 miles and I strived for the same. As race day grew closer, we encouraged each other as, at times, our confidence waned.

Race weekend finally arrived and we traveled to Orlando with our families the day before the race. The first stop was the ESPN-Wide World of Sports Complex to pick up the race packet. I was not expecting all of the amazing vendors that filled the space. I found the cutest little shoe charms to add some bling to my sneakers. We then checked into the hotel and enjoyed a poolside cocktail as the kids played in the pool.

Race day was a mix of nerves and excitement. We took an early bus from the hotel to Epcot where we were met with food trucks, music, and live entertainment. We followed the clearly marked paths to our section and the wait began. Since the temperatures were so warm leading up to race day, I was unprepared for the cold wait. While I was shivering and nervously awaiting the start of the race, Jeff Galloway, began to speak. He is a former Olympian and the official runDisney training consultant. His entire speech was extremely motivating, but one key phrase that really stood out to me was, “You’ve already put in the work, now this is your victory lap!”. This became my mantra throughout the race and really hit home for me. It allowed me to let go of all of my doubts and enjoy the moment.
We spent the next roughly two and a half hours enjoying all the race had to offer as we ran through both Epcot and Hollywood studios. We loved seeing all of the various characters and other photo opportunities along the way. I was amazed at how much entertainment there was, from mariachi bands to DJs, to marching bands, and even a strange bell organ. There was entertainment around every corner! I ALWAYS run while listening to music, but I was having so much fun I completely forgot about my earbuds! Before I knew it, we were crossing the finish line.

It was a moment for the record books. Words can’t even express the joy, sense of accomplishment, and gratitude I felt as I completed a goal I never thought I could. The time is now to get out there, set the goal, and make it happen. You won’t be sorry you did.
